Early Access Reels on Instagram: Tips for Creators.

Instagram is testing Early Access Reels, a new feature that lets creators share follower-only content to drive engagement and grow their audience.

A few weeks ago we wrote about Instagram testing a brand-new way to help creators grow their audiences, and it centres around Early Access Reels. This new feature lets creators publish a Reel that only their followers can watch for a set period of time. Anyone who doesn’t follow the creator won’t be able to view it until the timer runs out.

This test aims to encourage more people to hit the follow button, helping creators build stronger, more engaged communities on the platform.

What Are Early Access Reels?

As highlighted by social media expert Lindsey Gamble, some creators are now seeing a new “Early Access” option when they upload Reels. When a creator turns this feature on, the Reel becomes temporarily locked for non-followers.

Instead of seeing the usual Reel preview, non-followers are shown a blurred thumbnail with an “Early Access” label and a small clock-and-star icon. When they tap on it, Instagram shows a message explaining that they need to follow the creator to watch the Reel right away. Users also see a countdown timer showing when the Reel will become available to everyone.

This gives creators a simple and effective way to reward their existing followers while also encouraging new people to join their audience.

How Early Access Reels Build on Existing Instagram Tools

Early Access Reels expand on another feature Instagram introduced in May: Lockable Reels. With Lockable Reels, creators can share exclusive content that’s only viewable by people who have an unlock code. This opened the door for more personalised, community-focused content, giving creators new ways to make fans feel valued.

Early Access Reels follow a similar idea but are designed more specifically for audience growth. Instead of giving access only to those with a code, Early Access Reels encourage non-followers to join the creator’s community in exchange for early viewing privileges.

Why This Matters for Creators

While this isn’t a major change to how Instagram works, it does give creators another strategic tool to boost visibility and engagement. Instagram is a competitive platform, and anything that helps you stand out – even temporarily – can make a difference.

Here are a few potential benefits:

Increases Follower Growth

By making certain Reels “followers only” for a short time, creators can create a sense of exclusivity and urgency. People who are curious about the content may be more likely to follow straight away.

Builds Hype Around New Content

Creators can use Early Access Reels to tease big announcements, behind-the-scenes clips, product launches, or special surprises. This creates buzz and encourages fans to stay active and engaged.

Strengthens Community Engagement

Rewarding followers with early access helps them feel included and valued. This can lead to stronger relationships, more loyalty, and higher engagement over time.

Signals Interest to the Algorithm

More followers, more views, and more interaction send positive signals to Instagram’s algorithm. This can help creators appear in more feeds, boosting overall reach.

Tips for Making the Most of Early Access Reels

If you get access to this feature, here are some ideas to try:

  • Share exclusive teasers or “first look” content
  • Give early access to trending videos or series instalments
  • Reward followers with behind-the-scenes clips
  • Build hype for product launches or collaborations
  • Encourage non-followers to join by highlighting the countdown timer

Just make sure the content you’re hiding is truly worth following for – the value has to feel real to your audience.

When Will Everyone Get Early Access Reels?

Right now, Instagram is only testing the feature with selected creators. If the test goes well and Instagram sees positive engagement, it’s likely the feature will roll out to more users in the future. However, we will keep you updated.
