Social snapshot: Why we need more faces on LinkedIn

If you hate face-to-camera videos on LinkedIn, I get it. But here’s why you’re wrong.

It started with a chat.
I was talking to a few brilliant marketers the other day, and someone said, “I really can’t stand those face-to-camera videos on LinkedIn. They’re cringey.”

And you know what?
I understood exactly what they meant.
The awkward intros. The “just hopping on”. The vague waffle dressed up as personal insight. We’ve all watched videos that make us wince.

But it’s not the format that’s the issue. It’s the execution.

Because when they’re done well? Face-to-camera videos aren’t just powerful. They’re essential. They build trust. They drive engagement. And in 2025, they’re the backbone of a LinkedIn strategy that actually gets results.

The facts don’t lie (even if your feed makes you cringe)

  • Video posts on LinkedIn generate 5x more engagement than static ones (source)
  • The number of videos uploaded has doubled in a year, with views and likes shooting up by over 70% (source)
  • And vertical video now gets the algorithm love,  thanks to LinkedIn’s new mobile-first player and “Videos For You” carousel (source)

But most importantly:
Videos featuring a real human face (yes, yours) build more connection, more trust, and more action than any polished brand post ever will.

That stat about video increasing purchase intent by 45%? That’s not a fluke, it’s because people trust people (source).

So why do so many of them flop?

Because they’re saying nothing.
We’ve all seen those videos. Polite, professional, and completely forgettable. Wrapped in self-consciousness and saying the same thing five other people posted that morning.

Here’s my rule of thumb:
If your video wouldn’t stop you mid-scroll, then why would it stop anyone else?

It’s not about being loud. It’s about being useful. Or bold. Or honest. Or funny. But mostly? It’s about being you. Genuinely. Not overly polished. Not a TED talk. Just you, saying something worth hearing.

What’s actually working in LinkedIn video right now?

Let’s get to the good stuff. The stuff that’s moving the needle:

  • Short videos (under 30 seconds) still win for attention spans. But only when they land a clear opinion, a useful tip, or a question that actually sparks thought.
  • Longer videos (2–3 minutes) are back. Audiences will stick around if you’ve got something to say. Especially if it’s educational or story-driven (source).
  • Live videos get 7x more reactions than regular posts. People love being part of the moment.  (source).
  • Captions are non-negotiable. 85% of videos are watched with the sound off. If your story can’t be understood silently, it won’t be understood at all (source).

And let’s not forget employee-generated content. The brands letting real humans, not just marketing teams. show up on camera? They’re getting all the attention, and all the trust.

But what about carousels?

Carousels are great. Seriously.

They’re tidy. Structured. Swipeable. And if you’ve got a tip list or a case study, they’re perfect.

But they’re not you.
They don’t show your energy, your voice, your expressions. They don’t build that “I feel like I know them” magic that a face-to-camera video does in seconds.

If carousels are the textbook, face-to-camera is the conversation.
You need both, and don’t mistake clarity for connection.

Not because they don’t have a phone. Or tools. Or time.
But because they don’t know where to start. Or they’re nervous. Or worried they’ll look silly (source).

If you’re thinking of trying video, or getting back to it — here’s what I’d tell you:

✔️ Say something that matters to your audience. Have a point. A clear one.
✔️ Shoot vertical. LinkedIn’s built for it now.
✔️ Use captions. Always.
✔️ Be yourself, not a script.
✔️ Don’t wait until it’s perfect. Post it when it’s true.
✔️ And most importantly, do it again. And again. Consistency builds confidence, audience, and reach. Daily or weekly,  just show up.

One creator saw an 1100% increase in impressions in a month, just by showing up every day. You don’t need to go that far,  but you do need to start showing up with more you (source).

It’s your face, your voice, your energy, and that’s what sticks. That’s what converts.
So if you’ve got something meaningful to say… say it. Out loud. On video. On LinkedIn.

And if you’re scared, say it scared. But say it anyway.
