Across the Metaverse

So today we’ll take a look at Metaverse. Metaverse is the new product from Meta, the company behind Facebook. It’s a product that is hoping to do what Facebook did but in the V.R space, creating a virtual world where you can do anything and everything you can in real life. It has yet to be proven whether people will embrace it as willingly as the did Meta’s last product. Meta has invested Billions in the project and has yet to see the kind of uptake that would justify such a costly investment. Initial reports have said the Meta’s boundless world is well.. empty. According to this article in gamesindustry.biz, Meta’s user count in its newly launched ‘Horizon’ projected, full of user generated worlds where only “9% of virtual worlds built by the community are ever visited by 50 or more people. Most never receive any visitors.”

Meta has investors to keep happy however and will obviously be hoping to grow this user base over time. The question is how long will it take for the technology to catch up with the vision and for Metaverse to become a viable product?

According to Meta we’re still years away. At the company’s Connect conference held this week, Mark Zuckerberg noted that

“It’s not like this stuff is going to be fully mature in a year or even two or three years. It’s going to take a long time to build out the next computing platform.”

Last year, after Facebooks rebrand to Meta, Zuckerberg announced that the Metaverse product would take 5 to 10 years to become a mainstream concern. So by that timeline the Metaverse won’t be fully integrated until 2031. So Zuckerberg is obviously building the platform now with an eye to future advancements in tech and processing power.

The conclusion to all of this is that Metaverse – the interconnected world where we can all shop, work and play in a seamless, integrated experience is years away, even according to Meta’s own public statements. So if you’re a brand or company maybe you should hold of on pouring massive sums into your company’s Metaverse presence or getting everyone in the office a VR headset just yet.
